Along the Edge of the Cliff: Why the AI Transformation in Professional Services Stagnated

The opportunities AI brings are massive, bigger than most professional services organizations even realize at this point. But it also brings hard challenges. As an industry, we are being pushed to the limit to reinvent ourselves. The traditional model of billing for time and expertise is changing. The billable hour model is under heavy pressure.

At the same time, we face a painful reality: 90% of AI projects in professional services are stuck at early stages. They are completely falling short of the operational impact that firms proudly promised their boards.

Why is change so damn difficult?
It’s simple: it is human nature! Change is inherently difficult because the brain views the unknown as a threat. We are biologically hardwired to prefer familiar routines to conserve energy. Even when a change is positive, it disrupts your comfort zone and triggers the nervous system's resistance. Even unhealthy or stagnant situations provide a sense of predictability. That feels safe, no matter how bad it actually is for business.

One of the most frustrating aspects of growth and change is when we see viable solutions, but somehow we can’t seem to action them. We see the solution right in front of us, but we don't move. The result? We are often left feeling frustrated, aggravated, depressed, or stuck. And the worst part? We even beat ourselves up, too, because our intelligence sees a clear path forward.

So what’s the actual issue here?

No execution, no harmony
Often, it just comes down to the lack of a clear strategy. Data, processes, and people are not harmonized. Sure, plans are made, we love making plans, but there is zero execution. It stays on paper.

From a fantastic entrepreneur, who unfortunately is no longer with us, I once learned that the most beautiful flowers grow along the edge of the cliff. You have to dare to get close to the edge to achieve something truly spectacular. Charles Darwin also taught us that it is not the strongest that survives, but the one that is most adaptable to change.

A personal mirror
As a father of two sons, with my youngest having autism, I realize all too well at home every single day how difficult change can be. I see firsthand the challenges it brings. But at the same time, no matter how tough it is, I try to break through those fixed structures and routines every day. Because standing still means going backward.

Not only can change be hard, it can also be scary. Even when change seems like a good idea, there can be consequences that we wonder if we’re ready for.

Picking up the guantlet
Let’s stop talking in clichés. AI is going to change the game, ready or not. The question is whether we have the courage to harmonize our data and processes, align our people, and dare to take that step along the edge of the cliff.

Stop making plans. Start executing.

Sound familiar? Where is your organization getting stuck when it comes to translating AI into actual daily operations?
