The hidden costs of slow decision-making in a data-driven world

A wrong decision can cost money. Most organizations know this. But what is often forgotten is that making no decision at all can sometimes be even more expensive. In an economic environment where markets change rapidly, for many companies it is not the risk of making the wrong choice that is growing, but the risk of delay. While organizations wait for more information, additional analysis, or further approvals, opportunities are lost. New customers choose a competitor, projects get delayed, and commercial possibilities disappear before they can be seized.

Why decisions are taking longer and longer
At first glance, this seems strange. After all, organizations have more data at their disposal than ever before. Financial data, market reports, dashboards, AI tools, and real-time information are available virtually everywhere.

Yet more information does not automatically lead to greater clarity. In fact, many companies experience just the opposite. When data is scattered across different systems and departments, it takes time to form a complete picture. Teams analyze the same situation from different perspectives, which slows down decision-making.

As a result, organizations keep searching for confirmation. Just one more report. Just one more analysis. Just one more meeting.

But in the meantime, the market just keeps changing.

The Price of Delay
The costs of delayed decision-making aren’t always immediately visible on the balance sheet.
A company that enters a new market too late will only see that revenue fails to materialize. A supplier who isn’t evaluated in a timely manner can cause problems later on. A business opportunity that seems uncertain today may be gone tomorrow.

That is precisely why successful organizations view risk differently. They do not try to eliminate every uncertainty before taking action. Instead, they ensure they have sufficient insight to make a well-considered choice.

Risk then becomes not a reason to stand still, but a factor that is taken into account in decision-making.

Speed Requires Trust
Making decisions faster does not mean acting impulsively. It means that organizations have confidence in their data, processes, and people.

Consider real-time credit information, signs of late payments, industry trends, or changes in customers’ financial health. When relevant information is available at the moment a decision must be made, it creates room to act more quickly.

In addition, a shared understanding within the organization helps. When sales, finance, and risk management work with the same information, less time needs to be spent debating the facts and more on determining the right next step.

The conclusion? Many organizations today have access to enormous amounts of data but struggle to quickly translate this information into concrete decisions. This creates a new risk: decision delays.

While uncertainty will likely never disappear entirely, companies can learn to make faster and better-informed choices. Organizations that do so are often not the ones with the most data, but the ones that know how to turn available information into action the fastest.

This blog post is a contribution from Coface. Organizations that have access to reliable business information can identify opportunities more quickly, assess risks more effectively, and make decisions with greater confidence. Coface supports companies in this process by providing business information and risk insights. For more information, visit the website or stop by Coface’s booth at Data Expo.
